Those Lovely Roses
Words & Photographs by Didier Mervilde

Who doesn’t like roses? They are the most well known flowers in the world. There are fossil records of roses showing they have existed for millions of years. Cultivated in China they were introduced in Europe by the Romans.

Today we have thousands of them in different colors and varieties. People such as Austin, Archer, Lens, Meilland are known over the whole world for creating new varieties.

Roses existed in different classes such as:

Modern roses rose7.jpg (15579 bytes) Old roses rose8.jpg (13282 bytes) Botanic roses

Each class has different sub-classes such as: Climbing roses, miniature roses, bush-roses etc.

Names such as Heritage , Winchester Cathedral, Gertrude Jekyll, Abraham Darby, Golden Celebration...are very famous.

This is why my family and I are "rose lovers".
